Pick up your rental car and travel westward to Roskilde. Visit the Viking Ship Museum and Roskilde Cathedral. Continue to Halskov, and drive over the bridge to the island of Funen. Drive to Kvaerndrup and visit Egeskov Castle, Europe’s best-preserved water fortress, and its spectacular gardens. Continue to Odense. (First Grand Odense or similar)
This morning, visit Hans Christian Andersen’s home, now a museum dedicated to the world-famous fairy-tale writer. Cross the waterway to Jutland peninsula. En route to Aarhus, detour to Jelling and the UNESCO-listed complex that includes the 10th-century rune stones left by two Viking kings. Continue to Aarhus and visit the Old Town, Den Gamle By. Also, you may visit the cathedral and the Moesgaard museum of Danish prehistory, or drive past Marselisborg Castle. (First Atlantic or similar)
After breakfast, depart by ferry to the peninsula Sjaellands Odde on Zealand. Continue to Hillerod and Frederiksborg Castle, home of the Museum of National History. The castle chapel houses Denmark’s oldest organ, dating from 1610. (Hillerod or similar)
Today, drive to Helsingor, passing Fredensborg Palace, perhaps making a brief photo stop. In Helsingor, visit Kronborg Castle, setting of Hamlet. Return to Copenhagen along the coastal road, where you may stop to visit the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art or Rungstedlund, which was the family home of Out of Africa author Karen Blixen.
